Rooted in Michigan: Get to Know the Manistee Tree

When people think of giant trees, they often picture the towering sequoias of the West Coast. Here in Michigan, we have our own majestic forest giants, the towering white pines and ancient hemlocks of the Manistee National Forest. These are the largest trees in the stateLiving landmarks that stand as symbols of endurance, growth, and natural beauty. At National Sequoias, we believe you don’t have to travel across the country to experience something inspiring, and you don’t have to be a national park to grow something legendary in your own backyard.

The Tallest Trees in Michigan

Tucked along the banks of the Manistee River and throughout the Manistee National Forest, you’ll find towering Eastern White Pines, which can reach up to 150 feet tall with trunks more than four feet wide. These trees once blanketed Michigan before the logging boom of the 1800s, and the remaining giants are now treasured for their rarity and ecological value. Some of the most impressive specimens can be found near Red Bridge, along the Manistee River Trail, and in the Udell Hills area, offering a breathtaking view into Michigan’s natural past.

A Walk Among the Ancients

If you’re looking to experience Michigan’s largest trees firsthand, plan a visit to the Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness AreaHere, old-growth hemlocks and pines meet the windswept Lake Michigan dunes. The Loda Lake Wildflower Sanctuary also offers peaceful trails through towering canopies, providing not only a scenic experience but also insight into the biodiversity that these trees support. These forests serve as inspiration for everything we do at National Sequoias.  A reminder that with time, care, and vision, even the smallest tree can grow into something monumental.
